How we check listings
Where listings come from
Only from open data that may be republished, and from each business's own website and social pages:
- OpenStreetMap: © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Data derived from OpenStreetMap is kept in its own layer.
- Foursquare Open Source Places, under the Apache 2.0 licence.
- Overture Maps Foundation places, under the CDLA Permissive 2.0 licence.
- Open Food Facts for brands and products, under the Open Database License (ODbL).
We never copy listings from Google Maps or other directories. Each listing names its sources at the bottom of the page.
How we check
- Every listing shows a "Last checked" date.
- When we confirm the details on the place's own website or social pages, the listing says so. When we can't, it shows Unverified and asks whether it is still open.
- Doctors and dietitians get the Doctor or Dietitian label only after we check the licence in a public registry; until then the profile says the label is pending.
- Anyone can report a problem from any listing; owners can claim theirs with a code sent to the listing's own phone, email or Instagram.
- Instagram and Telegram links come from the place's own website or its owner; a Telegram link is shown only when it is a t.me channel, group or username, and we never read Telegram itself.
Fully vegan first
- Every list shows fully vegan places first: everything they serve is plant based.
- Places that also serve animal food, vegetarian ones included, appear only in a separate Vegan options list, each with just the dishes its own menu marks vegan: name, a short description, the price with its currency code, the page we read and the date. We leave out its other dishes, its full menu and any dish that names an animal food (cheese, egg, honey, milk, butter...). A place with no such dish is not listed.
- Featured or paid placement is only for fully vegan places.
Map data
- Map tiles: OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles, data from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL). Maps drawn with MapLibre GL JS (BSD licence).
- Positions: addresses in the United States are placed with the US Census Bureau geocoder; all others with OpenStreetMap Nominatim (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL).
- A pin sits at the street address only when the address comes from the place's own website and our position agrees with a second, independent position within 500 metres. A place added from OpenStreetMap keeps the pin OpenStreetMap contributors gave the venue itself. Otherwise the listing shows its city with the words "Approximate location", never a guessed pin. Owners can fix their pin when they claim the listing.
What we don't do
No star ratings, no reviews, no paid influence on what a listing says. Paid placements are always labelled, and only fully vegan places can have one.
